Open the free thumbnail compressor, choose your image and select Compress under 2 MB. Thumbish adjusts JPEG quality and preserves dimensions, then reports the actual output size. The target is below 2,000,000 bytes. If it cannot be reached without resizing, the tool tells you to use the resizer first.
Why target under 2 MB?
YouTube’s current help page lists 2 MB for mobile video-thumbnail uploads and 50 MB for desktop uploads. If you are publishing from a phone, a compact file avoids that mobile size obstacle. Desktop uploads do not share the same 2 MB limit.
Thumbish uses a strict below-2,000,000-byte target rather than rounding the output size for eligibility. Always read the actual result and verify it in the uploader you use.
Convert a large PNG to a compact JPG
PNG often produces large files for complex photographic artwork because it stores pixels without JPEG’s lossy compression. A JPG can be much smaller, but fine lettering and hard edges may show artifacts.
The compressor accepts JPG, PNG and WebP and exports JPG. Transparent areas become black. Use a separate editor first if your artwork needs a different background. Keep the original so you can try another export without repeatedly recompressing a compressed file.
Preserve dimensions, then inspect quality
The tool starts at high JPEG quality and lowers quality only when needed to meet its target. It never silently shrinks the dimensions. For exceptionally large images that cannot fit at the supported minimum quality, it returns a message instead of a misleading success.
If that happens, use the resizer to create the dimensions you need, then compress that result. Review the final JPG at full size for artifacts and in the preview for mobile readability.
What if the input is already smaller than 2 MB?
An already compact file may not need compression. Converting a highly optimized WebP or JPG to a new JPG can increase its size. The tool reports that outcome rather than claiming every file gets smaller.
Keep the original if it is already suitable and has better visible quality. A smaller number alone is not a reason to accept blurred text or damaged details.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a thumbnail under 2 MB?
Choose your image and select Compress under 2 MB. The tool adjusts JPEG quality, preserves dimensions and exports below 2,000,000 bytes when possible. If it cannot reach that target, resize first.
Is 2 MB the upload limit on every device?
No. YouTube currently lists 2 MB for mobile video-thumbnail uploads and 50 MB for desktop. This tool targets a compact mobile-friendly file.
Does compression preserve transparency and original quality?
The output is a lossy JPG. Transparency becomes black and compression can soften text and edges. Review the result before publishing.
