Resize a YouTube thumbnail to 1280 × 720 without stretching

Resize thumbnails to 1280 × 720, Full HD or 4K using cropping or padding. Preserve proportions and check the result before publishing.

Use the free thumbnail resizer, choose a 16:9 resolution and select whole-image padding or interactive cropping. Both keep the original image proportions. Drag and zoom the image inside the 16:9 canvas to choose the exported area. Padding retains all content at the starting zoom; cropping fills the frame by removing edges. Download the JPG after inspecting the preview.

Choose the export dimensions

The resizer offers 1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080 and 3840 × 2160. Each has a 16:9 aspect ratio. YouTube currently recommends 3840 × 2160 for landscape video thumbnails, with a minimum width of 640 pixels.

A compact HD export can be useful when you need a smaller file, but avoid describing it as YouTube’s current recommended resolution. Match your source quality to the export: enlarging a small image does not recreate lost detail.

Padding and cropping solve different problems

Whole-image padding scales the image until everything fits and fills the unused space with black. This protects edge text or a subject near the boundary, but you may see black bars.

Interactive cropping scales the image to fill the entire frame and removes the overflow outside your chosen frame. Inspect faces, product outlines and words near the crop. Drag the image within the 16:9 frame and adjust zoom to choose your focal point. Use the direction buttons or arrow keys for smaller adjustments.

Example: turning a square image into a landscape thumbnail

A square source cannot fill a 16:9 rectangle without either cropping or padding if you preserve proportions. Padding keeps the square artwork visible in the middle with bars on both sides. Interactive cropping fills the width but removes content from the top and bottom.

If your headline sits at the top edge, padding may keep it intact while the positioned crop removes it. If neither result communicates the video well, create a landscape composition instead of forcing the square design into a new shape.

Check the JPG and final file size

The resizer exports JPEG at high quality and shows its measured byte size. Transparency is flattened onto black. Resizing is separate from reaching a file-size target.

For a mobile upload, send a large resized JPG through the compressor to target under 2 MB. Preview that final output with your intended title before uploading.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize to 1280 × 720 without stretching?

Select 1280 × 720 and choose Fill frame or Fit whole image, then drag and zoom in the 16:9 canvas. Both preserve source proportions. Inspect the result and download the JPG.

Can I export a 4K thumbnail?

Yes. Choose 3840 × 2160. Enlarging a small source adds pixels but cannot restore missing detail.

Will resizing also compress under 2 MB?

The resizer exports a high-quality JPG and reports its size. Use the separate compressor if you need an output below 2 MB.
